President Obama has highlighted energy as one of three areas that are “absolutely critical to our economic future.” To support the President’s vision, the Department of Energy (DOE) invested $38.7 billion of its Recovery funds to improve mission-critical energy infrastructure and modernization initiatives, including energy conservation and renewable energy sources, enterprise consolidation, smart grid, and the establishment of the Advance Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). This year, the Department has requested $26.4 billion to further advance energy security, nuclear security, environmental responsibility and management excellence.
As part of this effort, the DOE has created two new incentives for private innovation. Energy Innovation Hubs focus on transforming energy technologies into commercially deployable materials, devices and systems, while Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) have been established to break down fundamental scientific roadblocks to clean energy and energy security. In addition, the DOE will invest in renewable sources of electrical generation such as solar, wind and geothermal while working to improve electricity transmission, digital network controls, and energy distribution and storage. From its 17 national laboratories to the Beltway, DOE aims to reduce traditional barriers and reach across the multi-layered framework of the energy community.
On April 22, 2010, the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, AFCEA Energy will host it's “Business and Technology Symposium”. This half-day symposium will bring together senior government leaders and IT professionals from across DOE, other federal civilian agencies, the Department of Defense and industry to foster better interagency communication among key stakeholders, share lessons learned, identify critical technology issues and promote innovation to advance the national energy mission.
Attendees will learn:
